Training

Canoe training meets at Monterey State Beach, located on Del Monte Avenue (across from McDonalds), next to Monterey Bay Kayaks. Look for the white canoes next to Monterey Bay Kayaks fence, and just before the rec trail and the huge eucaplytus tree.

New paddlers of all ages are welcome. Practice times are listed below. Feel free to drop in for Sprint practice. You will be asked to complete a waiver and are welcome to try paddling free for two weeks. If after two weeks you decide to join the club, membership dues will apply. Membership dues are paid annually and include instruction and the use of the canoes and paddles.

See Enrollment for current dues and a copy of the waiver. Dress in clothes that you do not mind getting wet (wetsuits preferred) and bring something warm to put on after.

If you wish to obtain a Ke Kai O'Uhane Training Manual, please contact Leah, our Long Distance Head Coach.

Introduction to Hawaiian Outrigger Canoeing

This Introduction to Hawaiian Outrigger Canoeing is a great compilation of articles from a number of outrigger canoe clubs, covering such things as a brief history of outrigger canoeing, what to do and bring for before, during and after paddling, paddling techniques, etc.

Mahalo to all those who had a hand in putting this together!

Steering an Outrigger Canoe
by Joshua O'Connor

This Steering an Outrigger Canoe is a great introductory article hosted on the website of long time paddler Joshua O'Connor: Joshuaoconnor.com.
